Event Details

By today’s standards information traveled slowly in the 18th century. Be a guest in Fort Watauga as news of Independence finally arrives on the colonial frontier. What did the early settlers think about a new nation? Walk among historical characters and hear their varied reactions to the Declaration. Enjoy living history demonstrations and presentations throughout the day as we celebrate America 250! 

All programs will be held inside Fort Watauga unless noted otherwise.

10:00 – Morning Assembly: The Washington Co. Militia falls in for inspection and raises the flag.

10:30 – Walking in Frontier Footsteps - Siege of Fort Watauga: On July 21, 1776 Cherokee warriors began their attack on Fort Watauga as part of the larger Anglo-Cherokee war. Join park staff for a guided walk on the park grounds to learn more about this historic event that took place in this vicinity 250 years ago.

11:00 – Child Soldiers of the American Revolution: Join brothers Ivan and Cohen Daniels to learn about the youngest participants in our war for independence.

11:30 – Ice Cream: An 18th Century Delicacy: Join Mrs. Janik to learn how our colonial ancestors made and enjoyed this refreshing treat.

12:00 – Colonial Militia Demonstration: Members of the Washington Co. Regiment will give a demonstration of flintlock weaponry and 18th century battlefield tactics.

1:00 – Reading of the Declaration of Independence: The document declaring our separation from Great Britain has arrived on the Frontier. Join the local settlers and hear their varied reactions during this public reading inside Fort Watauga.

2:00 – Meet the Author Book Signing: Meet historian and author Michael C. Hardy in the park visitor center as he showcases his latest work Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee in the American Revolution. Mr. Hardy will be on hand to chat and sign books until 4:00 PM.

2:30 – Bayonet Competition & Ladies Skillet Toss Witness some friendly rivalry between the local settlers as the gentlemen of the militia hone their ability with this 18th century weapon and the ladies display their skills of strength and accuracy. It’s a spectacle not to be missed!

3:00 – Retiring the Colors: The event comes to a close as the Washington Co. Militia lowers the flag.
