Look no further than NOLI’s inaugural "Introduction to Plant Identification" course! In this course, led by botanist Dr. Steven Price, students will embark on an exciting journey through the enchanting world of plant identification. Whether you're an aspiring botanist, a passionate gardener, an environmental enthusiast or simply curious about the flora in east Tennessee, this course is designed to equip you with the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to confidently identify a myriad of plants.
Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on practical field techniques, such as using conventional keys, field guides, the digital resources, and mobile apps to accurately identify plants in various habitats. Students will also explore the genetics and evolutionary relationships of different genera and plant families. Through a blend of theoretical learning and practical exercises, you'll develop the skills and confidence needed to accurately identify a wide variety of plant species. From trees and shrubs to wildflowers and grasses, you'll learn to recognize important botanical features such as the leaves, flowers, stems, and fruits that are necessary to identify a plant.
By fostering a deeper knowledge of the plant world, this course aims to inspire a lifelong passion for plants. By the end of the day, students will emerge with a newfound appreciation for the botanical world and the skills necessary to confidently identify plants in their natural or artificial habitats. This course is your gateway to unlocking the secrets of plant identification.
What to Bring: Good hiking shoes, drinking water (1-2 liters recommended), lunch, proper clothing suitable for the conditions (synthetic, non-cotton layers recommended), day pack (optional)
