Join Harrison Bay rangers to learn the fundamentals of kayak usage and safety with our Kayaking 101 course. Designed specifically for beginners, this introductory session offers a relaxed, welcoming environment to help you build confidence on the water. Whether you are stepping into a kayak for the very first time or looking to refresh your basic skills, Harrison Bay park staff will guide you through the essentials of flatwater paddling.
The program focuses heavily on foundational safety and proper equipment usage. Participants will learn how to properly fit a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), handle a kayak paddle efficiently, and execute basic maneuvering strokes to turn, stop, and travel smoothly.You will also cover key water safety principles, including launching and exiting your boat safely from the shore and understanding how to navigate local water conditions.
All necessary paddling gear—including kayaks, paddles, and life jackets—will be provided. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing that can get wet, secure footwear, and bring along sunscreen and water!
We we will meet for the program at the Friends Porch, located near the playground parking lot.
