Event Details

Meet Ranger Garrison at the Rock Island Nature Center at 1:00pm to explore the wonderful world of watercolor using gouache - a form of watercolor paint with extra minerals added to make them opaque. They behave very similarly to watercolor but show up on black paper. We will be painting a night creature (to be decided, ideas include: luna moth, chuck-wills-widow, or bat).

Beginners and experienced artists are both welcome! You get to access and use professional grade watercolor paints, Arches watercolor paper, a host of different tools, and can get opinions and/or suggestions on the progression of your painting. This class is geared towards adults, but younger attendees who are serious about developing their artistic palette are also welcome. The ranger will demonstrate techniques and will paint alongside when not taking questions, but you are not required to follow along.

If you are interested in more watercolor programs, we will be doing a different topic every month for the 2026 year. You can come back and enjoy them all! Locations and exact days the future watercolor programs are hosted may vary. Alternatively, if you are looking for a watercolor class for younger kids, we offer a separate program for this activity once a month as well.
