Starting in early 2026, North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Park will undergo a major improvement project to enhance visitor access and amenities. While construction is underway, the main parking area will be closed, and access to the Blue Hole will be temporarily unavailable for approximately one year.
Once completed, the project will feature an improved park entrance, newly paved and striped parking areas, a new ADA-accessible river viewing pier, and a restroom facility, all designed to create a more welcoming and accessible experience for all visitors.
“We’re excited about the long-term benefits these improvements will bring to the park,” said Park Manager Sarah Geeslin. “While construction will temporarily limit parking and require the closure of the Blue Hole, these upgrades will create a safer, more accessible experience for visitors in the future. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during this project, as visitor safety is always our top priority.”
During construction, all swimming areas accessed from the main parking area off Montlake Road will be closed, including the Blue Hole. Visitors are asked to respect posted closures. Entering a closed area is not permitted under park rules.
The Blue Hole, located approximately one mile from the parking area, is a popular destination for many guests. However, due to the nature of the construction and the steep, rugged terrain on both sides of the gorge, there is no safe way to provide access during the project.
Other areas of the park, such as Flipper Bend and Barker Camp, will remain open but have limited parking. Visitors are encouraged to carpool when possible and to be aware that these locations feature challenging terrain that may not be suitable for all skill levels.
Because the park often experiences high visitation, visitors should park only in designated areas. If parking is full, guests are encouraged to explore nearby state parks, including Cumberland Trail State Park, Harrison Bay State Park, and Booker T. Washington State Park.
Please note that access to areas along Chickamauga Creek may be temporarily closed due to inclement weather or rising water levels. Rangers and park staff may close areas as needed to ensure public safety, sometimes with little or no advance notice.
