As the temperatures continue to rise, daydreams of taking off for the day to swim in the lakes and rivers, paddle, and fish will become more frequent. Pickett CCC Memorial State Park provides a fantastic place for people to enjoy the outdoors. From hiking trails to fishing to stargazing and more, people look forward to exploring something new, trip after trip.

This year, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park is undergoing necessary renovations to improve facilities and make the park more accessible for all visitors. Once the renovations are complete, accessibility to the beach and boathouse will be greatly improved, a new kayak launch will be installed, the campground will receive a brand-new bathhouse, and the recreation lodge will be renovated. We are incredibly excited about these transformations!

Certain park areas, including our swim beach, rentable boats, and boat dock, will be unavailable during these renovations. However, you are more than welcome to bring your personal canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards to explore the beautiful lake on your own.

We understand that this may come as disappointing news, but we want to assure you that there are still plenty of ways to make your visit enjoyable and memorable. For those looking to cool off during their visit, here are some suggestions for nearby swimming areas, including public pools.

More Ways to Stay Cool Nearby:

  • Sgt. Alvin C. York State Park: Visitors to Sgt. Alvin C. York can swim (at their own risk) or paddle in the Wolf River. Multiple access points are found in the park to launch your paddling equipment, including one near the picnic area (so you can enjoy the whole day!)
  • Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area: On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, visitors can enjoy the Bandy Creek Swimming Pool, which opens on May 24th, for a small daily fee.
    • Know before you go: The Bandy Creek Swimming Pool uses EST for operating hours, and Pickett CCC Memorial State Park operates on CST.
  • Jamestown: The Jamestown Community Center Pool is available to enter for a small fee from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Behind the pool is a free-to-enter splash pad.

Within the park, fishing will still be available at the lake, and our miles of hiking trails are ready to take you on an adventure. We recommend checking out the Hazard Cave Trail, which leads to a large rock house that can provide refreshing cooling on hot days. Our park rangers will also be offering educational programs for all ages.
