Located in Roane County, Fort Southwest Point State Historic Park revives pinnacle, yet lesser-known moments from the beginnings of the state of Tennessee and the United States. Constructed in 1797 by federal troops, Fort Southwest Point served as the federal presence on the outskirts of the established settlement of the United States. The fort served as a negotiation space with the Cherokee Nation for the protection of their land rights and later became a waystation for settlers on their westward expansion.

In 1972, the land became recognized for its historic and archaeological significance, earning its spot on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1974, the city of Kingston opened the area as a historic site and recreational public park.

Fort Southwest Point is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. Visitors should be aware of the safety rules located at all points of entry and at the park office.
Responsible Recreation

Visitors must be aware that climbing any of the buildings or fort walls, and swimming, are not permitted at the park. All dogs must be leashed at all times, and alcohol is not allowed. Visitors may not dig or use metal detectors on park grounds.

Fort Southwest Point offers a half-mile paved walking trail following the shoreline on Watts Bar Lake, and is actively working on further improvements to accessibility in the park facilities.
