Event Details

From our clothing we put on in the morning to the sheets we sleep on at night, we use and touch fabrics all the time – even if we don’t realize! How often do we think about the history of these fabrics and how they used to be a standard part of everyday American life?

This program is recommended for ages 10 and above, but everyone is welcome to attend! Ages 8 and under may participate with adult supervision.

Drop spindle, a variation on the spinning wheel, is an interactive and fun skill that grasps loose fibers and transforms them into thread. It is an exciting feeling to see the thread come together by your own hands! This skill is the beginning of creating art, knitting, crocheting, and more. Drop spindle is a great introduction to the world of spinning, all while just being held in one hand.

During this program, we will learn about how to use a drop spindle, everything the tool may be able to create, and what it meant to those living in the 19th century. Come learn a craft that has been practiced since the Stone Age in many forms and for many purposes!
