Event Details

Start the first Saturday of autumn with a two-mile hike within Cheeks Bend, part of the Duck River Complex State Natural Area. Participants will enjoy a walk though limestone woods with small cedar glade openings, learn about karst topography, search for some unusual limestone-loving ferns, arrive at a lovely overlook along the Duck River, and – for those who wish – take a short excursion into a cave that exits at another overlook. We’ll learn about past research and fossil evidence of Pleistocene-era (ice age) animals that used to occur in Tennessee. Along the way, trip leaders will discuss the history of conservation along the Duck including present efforts to further protect the river. 

Wear sturdy shoes. We recommend long pants. Bring water and snacks and be prepared to hike over uneven terrain with some steep sections. Those who wish to enter the cave should also bring a headlamp or flashlight. 

The access to Cheeks Bend does not have any restroom facilities. Plan accordingly or be prepared to take care of those needs outside.
