In honor of Vulture Awareness Day that happens in early September every year, we will celebrate one of Rock Island's most numerous, but often unappreciated birds: vultures. We have turkey and black vultures at Rock Island State Park. Want to learn more? Find out why they are so important! Meet the ranger at the campground pavilion for a short and fun hunt for scavengers (kids must be accompanied by an adult). Can you find the most vultures? Can you find the biggest variety of scavengers? Be careful! Not all the critters you find will be scavengers, so you will have to put your thinking caps on to discover what scavengers are and what they aren't, and what we can do to encourage peaceful coexistence with them.
