Campground Infrastructure Renovation

Hiwassee Scenic River State Park

Starting in the fall of 2026, the Gee Creek Campground will undergo an infrastructure renovation, focusing on the bathhouse and other similar areas. This will close the campground until an anticipated reopening in spring 2027.

We thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions, please contact the park office.

  • Hiwassee Scenic River State Park is a natural wonder, offering visitors an abundance of recreational opportunities. In 1968, the 23-mile section of the Hiwassee Scenic River was designated as the first managed river as part of the Tennessee State Scenic River Program. The river is considered a Class III partially developed river, making it a more intermediate paddling and rafting opportunity. The park is known for its excellent opportunities for rafting, canoeing, kayaking, birding, fishing, and camping, making it the park where visitors return to time and time again.

    Safety and Accessibility

    • River Safety

While the river provides an enjoyable experience for most skill levels, conditions can change quickly and even calm sections may present hazards to those unfamiliar with water safety. Visitors are encouraged to wear life jackets, stay alert to current conditions, and paddle within their ability level. Due to scheduled and unscheduled releases from TVA, the water levels can rise rapidly. Visitors are required to wear personal flotation devices. No aluminum, glass, or styrofoam is allowed on the river.

      Gee Creek Campground

The Hiwassee Scenic River State Park’s Gee Creek campground is a haven and a home-away-from-home to many river users. Campsites are more tent-friendly than most. Some of the campsites are close enough to the river that you can be lulled to sleep each night by the sound of rushing water. An easy walk will lead you along the river's edge for fishing, nature walks, or a brisk dip in the cold waters.

      • Group kayaking on a calm river with lush green trees in the background.

      Paddling at Hiwassee River

Floating, canoeing, and rafting constitute the major attractions for the Hiwassee River. Based on the International Scale of River Difficulty, the river has Class II rapids.
