    Discover Indian Mountain State Park

Indian Mountain State Park's story is one of remarkable recovery. In the mid-20th century, the area was heavily excavated for coal, leaving behind a landscape scarred by strip mining. The conservation efforts to reclaim the abandoned mine site resulted in the creation of a unique park that showcases the power of ecological restoration.

Today, visitors can explore the lakes and the trails that wind through the reclaimed land, witnessing firsthand how nature can heal and thrive even after significant disturbance. The park stands as a symbol of hope and a reminder of the importance of responsible land stewardship. Come and experience the beauty that has risen from the ashes of industry and be inspired by the story of Indian Mountain State Park.

    History

Indian Mountain State Park was established in 1971, born from the conservation efforts to reclaim an abandoned strip mine.

Surface mining had taken a heavy toll on the land, leaving behind a scarred and barren landscape. The creation of the park was a deliberate effort to heal the environment and provide recreational opportunities for the public.

Before its transformation, the area was a bustling coal mining site. Surface mining, the preferred method of extraction, left the land significantly altered. The park's development involved reshaping the terrain, creating lakes from former mining pits, and reintroducing vegetation.

Today, Indian Mountain State Park stands as a testament to the success of these conservation efforts. The park's name, while seemingly implying a location on a mountain, actually refers to its location at the base of Indian Mountain.

Here, you'll find the Airplane Pond Trail, a .65-mile loop that leads to 10 hike-in campsites and several pools of water — remnants of the park's mining history. This area offers a glimpse into the park's past and a chance to connect with nature in a more secluded setting.
