Accessibility at Sycamore Shoals
Sycamore Shoals Accessibility
At Tennessee State Parks, we serve a variety of visitors including individuals with physical disabilities and those who may face other barriers to outdoor recreation. With a focus on accessibility, we continually strive to enhance our parks to better accommodate all visitors. Learn more about accessible features, amenities, programs, and services offered.
Visitor Center and Museum
Begin your exploration into the history at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and stop by the Visitor Center to browse the gift shop or grab a park map.
Learn about the nationally significant history of the late 18th century at the interpretive museum and theater. Exhibits inside tell the story of those who settled in the Watauga River Valley. Continue the story by entering the replica of Fort Watauga behind the Visitor Center. The fort, trail, interpretive museum and theater, and visitor center are wheelchair-friendly with parking available.
Carter Mansion Virtual Tour
Built between 1775 and 1780, the Carter Mansion may be the only remaining direct link to the Watauga Association and is the oldest frame house still standing in Tennessee.
View the detailed interior of the house through a virtual tour. Visit each room of the Carter Mansion by clicking the link below.
All-Terrain Wheelchairs
All-terrain wheelchairs are specialized wheelchairs designed to navigate a wide range of terrains that may be encountered in outdoor environments.
These are important to park visitors because they provide individuals with mobility impairments the opportunity to access and enjoy outdoor recreation areas that might otherwise be inaccessible.
Each park with an all-terrain wheelchair offers trail experiences that can accommodate this specialized wheelchair. The chairs are free to the public and available for both children and adults. The chairs can be operated independently and offer the option of allowing caretaker control.
To help us serve our visitors better, we kindly ask that you give us advance notice if you’d like to use a wheelchair. While it is possible to request a chair upon arrival, there is a possibility that the chair may already be reserved for another guest. Advanced requests ensure the availability of wheelchairs and make your experience even more enjoyable.
Amphitheater
Enjoy Tennessee’s official outdoor drama presented by local performers against the backdrop of Fort Watauga.
Experience the story of Sycamore Shoals through the eyes of the Overmountain settlers. Presented in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater, bleacher-style seating with front-row wheelchair accessibility. Sponsored by Friends of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park.
Picnic Areas
Host a picnic after exploring history at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. Our park has three wheelchair-friendly pavilions available to reserve. Each pavilion includes a grill, one accessible picnic table, and electricity. Water and wheelchair-friendly parking is located nearby for all three shelters.
