Renovations at Frozen Head State Park

Frozen Head State Park

Frozen Head State Park is undergoing several major renovations. As construction progresses, we will keep you updated on which sections have reopened. We thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions about your reservation, please call 1 (888) 867-2757.

Currently Closed:

  • All Big Cove Campsites
  • All Flat Fork Campsites
  • The Visitor Center (but the public restrooms remain open)
  • Shelters B & C
  • The Rocky Fork Area (including the Ross Gap Trailhead and volleyball courts)
  • A number of trails
    • The only accessible trail at this time is the Chimney Top Trail behind the Visitor Center. This trail is considered strenuous with significant elevation gain and up to a 14-mile hike.

During this renovation, we encourage campers to check out our nearby parks. Some nearby parks to consider are:

  • Expansive mountain view with autumn trees under a bright blue sky.
  • Frozen Head State Park encompasses over 24,000 acres of rugged wilderness in the Cumberland Mountains. Named for the 3,324-foot peak often shrouded in ice during winter, the park offers a primitive and unplugged experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Hike to the iconic Lookout Tower, explore cascading waterfalls, and discover the remnants of a historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp.

    Safety and Accessibility

    • Safety

Frozen Head State Park activities include hiking, backpacking, and primitive camping. We advise coming prepared, being aware of the weather, and exercising caution while hiking.

    • Accessibility

Frozen Head State Park is continuously improving the park to make more areas accessible to all. There is a wheelchair-friendly parking lot and shelter as well as picnic tables that fit wheelchairs. Site 16 at the Big Cove Campground is ADA accessible. Please request the site when making a reservation.

    • Responsible Recreation

Tennessee State Parks are dedicated to promoting responsible recreation — encouraging visitors to enjoy the parks’ natural beauty while minimizing their own impact. By practicing Leave No Trace principles and respecting park rules, visitors can help preserve these precious resources for future generations.

All Big Cove and Flat Fork Campsites will be closed beginning July 7, 2025 for renovation.

The renovation is expected to take approximately one year. We invite you to check out Norris Dam State Park, Cove Lake State Park, Cumberland Mountain State Park, or Big Ridge State Park for overnight stay options. Each is less than an hour away from Frozen Head.
