    Safety and Accessibility

    • Safety

      Harpeth River State Park is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. Certain areas — such as the Bluff Trail at the Narrows of the Harpeth and the Ridge Loop Trail at Hidden Lake — have steep drop-offs and can be slippery when wet. Visitors should exercise caution on these trails and be aware of their surroundings. Swimming or climbing rocks at Pattison Forge and the Montgomery Bell Tunnel pool area are prohibited. When paddling the river, always wear a personal flotation device and be aware of changing water conditions. 

    • Accessibility

      Visitors with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact the park office directly at 1-615-952-2099 to inquire about the most accessible areas and any available accommodation. Please note, however, that staff is often away from the park office in which case callers can leave a message. The park is committed to continuously improving accessibility and welcomes feedback from visitors to enhance the experience for everyone.

    • Water Level Safety

      On the Harpeth River, water levels four feet and below are considered dangerous. So, when water levels recede to five feet, boat access in the park is closed. Tubing is allowed in the park, but we advise against it when water levels are low. When water levels are below one foot, tubing on the Narrows of the Harpeth loop is prohibited.

    Whether you enjoy fly fishing or spin casting, the river hosts largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bream, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and other game fish.

    • Mound Bottom and Mace Bluff Archaeological Sites

      Mound Bottom is a Mississippian Period Native American Mound Complex jointly managed by the Tennessee Department of Archaeology and Harpeth River State Park. This site is thought to be one of the most important political and religious centers in Middle Tennessee between 800 CE to 1350 CE. Mound Bottom is not open to the public. Access is strictly prohibited unless accompanied by a park ranger. To schedule a ranger-led tour, please contact the park office.

    • Hidden Lake

      Uncover the secrets of Hidden Lake, a former quarry which was turned into a resort in the 1930s. Hike the Hidden Lake Trail and imagine the days when this area was a popular destination for recreation and relaxation. You might even discover the resort’s old terrazzo dance floor.

    • Newsom’s Mill

      Newsom's Mill is one of the oldest gristmills in Davidson County, dating to the early or mid-1800s. The Mill served as a gathering space where people could mill grain, trade goods, and share stories, cementing Newsom's Mill as a symbol of community, ingenuity, and survival in Nashville's early history.

    • Narrows of Harpeth

      Paddle along the tranquil waters of the Harpeth River, a gentle waterway perfect for canoeing and kayaking. Experience the beauty of the surrounding landscape as you glide through this scenic river corridor.

      A two-mile loop through open fields is great for birders and late summer wildflower hikes. Gossett Tract is located off Cedar Hill Road near Scott’s Cemetery.
