    Hunting at Fiery Gizzard

    Hunting is allowed in certain areas of Fiery Gizzard State Park with a permit.

    You can register for a permit online or by visiting the Fiery Gizzard office. There is no fee. Once you register, you will be emailed your permit.  

    A paper copy of your permit must be kept with you or on your cell phone while hunting. Please be prepared to show it to a ranger if asked.   

    Permits expire at the end of Deer season every year. A TWRA hunting license is also required. Visit TWRA for complete details. 

    Hunting Regulations

    Hunting within Fiery Gizzard State Park huntable land areas shall be in accordance with the laws and regulations of Tennessee State Parks and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. 

    Big Game, Small Game, Trapping, and Dog Training - Same as statewide seasons and bag limits. 

    Special Conditions 

    • All statewide seasons open
    • ATVs may be used only to retrieve harvested deer. To obtain access through the Sherwood Forest SNA gate, contact the Park Office at 931-924-2980.
    • No motorized vehicles are allowed at Hawkins Cove.
    • Hunt in designated areas only. NO Exceptions.
    • Each person hunting must have a permit. 
    • Target Practice is prohibited.
    • To ensure fairness, no spot can be saved. Climbing tree stands are allowed but are required to be taken down daily. Any unattended stand will be considered abandoned and confiscated.

    Be Responsible

    Preserve our park natural resources.  

    The intentional or wanton destruction, defacement, or removal of a natural or cultural feature or non-renewable natural resource is prohibited. 

    Important To Know

    • Safety Zones

      Safety zones are to be 100 yards from any road, trail, or building.  Additional safety zones at Sherwood Forest (Tom Pack Hollow) and Hawkins Cove (western edge) are shown on the map.  No hunting in safety zones.  It is the responsibility of every hunter to know where they are. 

    • Field Dressing

      Do not field-dress game in the parking lot or otherwise leave any sign or litter in the area.  

    • Alcoholic Beverages

      Possession of, or being under the influence of any alcoholic beverage, narcotic drug, barbiturate, or marijuana while hunting within the park property is prohibited. 

    • Bag Limits

      Deer and turkey shall be checked in at any approved TWRA checking station, on the TWRA website, or by the TWRA mobile application. Sherwood Forest/Hawkins Cove does not have a checking station. 

      Statewide bag and possession limits apply. 

    • Baiting

      The placement or depositing of any type of food to feed or mineral block to attract wildlife is prohibited. 

    • Camping

      Fires of any kind and camping are prohibited. 

    • Horses

      The use of horses is prohibited. 

    • Motorized Vehicles

      Special Use - ATVs may be used only to retrieve harvested deer. To obtain access through the Sherwood Forest SNA gate, contact the Park Office at 931-924-2980. No motorized vehicles are allowed at Hawkins Cove.
