Navigating to the Park

Savage Gulf State Park

Mapping applications are sometimes unreliable for navigating around Savage Gulf State Park. We recommend using the physical addresses provided near the bottom of our homepage to navigate to our different trailheads.

  • Camping at Savage Gulf

    Savage Gulf State Park is located on the Cumberland Plateau in Middle Tennessee, about an hour north of Chattanooga. The park protects one of the state’s most scenic wilderness areas, known for deep gorges, sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and extensive hiking trails. 

    Camping at Savage Gulf is entirely backcountry, with multiple hike-in campgrounds and designated group campsites. Savage Gulf also has one backcountry cabin, Hobbs Cabin. Hiking is required to reach all campsites and Hobbs Cabin. Campsites at Stone Door Campground and Savage Station Campground are available only a few hundred yards from the parking lot.

    Water: Potable water is available from a spigot in the campground.

    Visitors will walk in to the Stone Door Campground from the Savage Gulf North overnight parking lot. The Stone Door Campground has both standard sites and group campsites for visitors with larger parties.

    • Standard sites at the Stone Door Campground are limited to 6 people
    • Group Campsite A is limited to 30 people
    • Group Campsite B is limited to 45 people
    • Group Campsite C is limited to 60 people

    Savage Gulf Stagecoach Road Campground

    Distance to Campsite: 6.10 miles from Savage Gulf East parking lot | 7.50 miles from Savage Gulf South parking lot
    Water: A seasonal stream is nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions. Visitors should pack in what they will need.

    Visitors have multiple options to reach the Stagecoach Road Campground. 

    • Visitors who enter in from the Savage Gulf East parking lot will hike in via the Savage Day Loop and South Rim trails. 
    • Visitors who enter in from the Savage Gulf South parking lot will hike in via the Collins Rim and South Rim trails.

    Stagecoach Road Campground offers both standard backcountry sites with a maximum occupancy of six people per campsite and one backcountry group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30 people. 

    Stagecoach Road Campground

    Distance to campsite: 5.0 miles from the Savage Gulf North parking lot | 4.2 miles from the Savage Gulf South parking lot
    Water: Water is available from Schwoon Spring, but campers who choose to bring in water should practice Leave No Trace.

    Visitors have two options to reach the Sawmill Campground. Those who enter from the Savage Gulf North parking lot will hike in via the Stone Door, Big Creek Gulf, and Connector trails. 

    Those who enter from the Savage Gulf South parking lot will hike in via the Collins Gulf trail.

    The Sawmill Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a max occupancy of six per campsite. 

    Savage Station Campground

    Distance to campsite: A few hundred yards
    Water: Potable water is available at the campground entrance.

    This backcountry campground can be accessed from the Savage Gulf East overnight parking lot. All campsites are located a few hundred yards from the parking lot.

    Savage Station Campground offers standard campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite and one group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30. 

    Savage Falls Campground

    Distance to Campsite: 1.50 miles
    Water: Water is available from Savage Falls, but those bringing in water should practice Leave No Trace.

    Visitors will enter from the Savage Gulf East parking lot and hike to the campsites via the Savage Day Loop and South Rim trails.

    Savage Falls Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six people per campsite and one group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30 people. 

    Hobbs Cabin Campground

    Distance to campsite: 8.50 miles
    Water: There is a spring behind the cabin. Water may not be available during dry conditions.

    Visitors will enter in from the Savage Gulf East parking lot and hike via the Savage Day Loop and North Rim trails. 

    Hobbs Cabin Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite, one group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30, and one backcountry cabin with a maximum occupancy of six.

    Hobbs Cabin: This primitive backcountry cabin features six wood bunks, a wood-burning fireplace, a picnic table, and a fire ring. Tent and hammock camping around the Hobbs Cabin is prohibited.

    There is no vehicle access to Hobbs Cabin.

    Dinky Line Campground

    Distance to campsite: 3.5 miles or 5.8 miles, depending on the trails used
    Water: There is a seasonal stream nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions.

    Visitors will enter from the Savage Gulf East parking lot and hike to the campground via the Savage Day Loop and North Plateau trails (3.5 miles) or via the Savage Day Loop, North Rim, and Mountain Oak trails (5.8 miles). 

    Dinky Line Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a max occupancy of six per campsite. 

    Collins West Campground

    Distance to campsite: 0.5 miles
    Water: There is a seasonal spring nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions. 

    Visitors will enter from the Savage Gulf South parking lot and hike to the site via the Collins access trail. 

    Collins West Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite. 

    Alum Gap Campground

    Distance to campsite: 2.9 miles or 4.0 miles, depending on the trails used.
    Water: There is a seasonal stream nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions.

    Visitors will enter in from the Savage Gulf North parking lot and hike to the campground via the Laurel trail (2.9 miles) or via the Stone Door and Big Creek Rim trails (4.0 miles). No overnight parking at the Savage Gulf West parking area.

    Alum Gap Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a max occupancy of six per campsite and one group campsite with a max occupancy of 30. 

    Meadow Creek Campground

    Distance to campsite: 5.3 miles
    Water: There is a seasonal stream nearby, water may not be available during dry conditions.

    Visitors will enter in from the Savage Gulf East parking lot and hike to the campground via the Savage Day Loop and North Plateau trails. 

    Meadow Creek Campground offers standard backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six people per campsite and one backcountry group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30 people. 

    Good Information To Know

    • Water

      Water must be filtered from natural sources or carried in, be sure to check with the ranger stations about water availability. At Stone Door Campground and Savage Station Campground, portable water is available at the campground entrance.  

    • Fire Area & Pit Toilet

      A designated fire area and a pit toilet are also available at each campground.  

    • Site Capacity

      Site capacity information can be found under site features on the campsite reservation page. Please look closely at your campsite's capacity when reserving.  

    Firewood Policy 

    Tennessee State Parks asks that ALL campfires be made with heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park, near the campsite. Please refrain from bringing untreated wood into the park.
