Campground Infrastructure Renovation

Starting in the fall of 2026, the Gee Creek Campground will undergo an infrastructure renovation, focusing on the bathhouse and other similar areas. This will close the campground until an anticipated reopening in spring 2027.

  • Camping at Hiwassee Scenic River

    Hiwassee Scenic River State Park is located in Southeast Tennessee along the Hiwassee River, a designated Tennessee State Scenic River, about an hour northeast of Chattanooga. The park offers a quiet, riverside setting known for its clear water, forested banks, and strong connection to paddle-based recreation. Visitors can enjoy paddling the river, hiking nearby trails, fishing, and birding throughout the park. 

    Camping is available at the Gee Creek Campground, a primitive campground that can accommodate tents and small trailers, with no utility hookups available.

    Gee Creek primitive campground sites are each equipped with a table, fire ring and a grill. There is a fee for their use and the stay limit is two weeks. Public water and a bathhouse containing sinks, commodes, and hot showers are located near the center of the campground. The bathhouse is available to campers at no additional charge.

    Gee Creek Group Camp field has 8 separate group campsites. These sites vary in size. Group Site 1, 2 and 7 can accommodate between 10-25 people per site. Group Sites 3-6 can accommodate between 25-50 people per site. Group Site 8 accommodates up to 75 people. Each site is equipped with 2 picnic tables and a fire ring. There is a large field area in the center of these sites that can be used for group activities.

    All rates subject to change. Taxes and fees are added upon reservation.

    Tent camping is permitted along most of the John Muir Trail above the Appalachia Powerhouse. (This is not a state scenic trail, however, it does parallel the state scenic river.) It is a USDA FS managed area of the Cherokee National Forest.

    Firewood Policy 

    Tennessee State Parks asks that ALL campfires be made with heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park, near the campsite. Please refrain from bringing untreated wood into the park.

    Accessibility

    If you wish to reserve an ADA accessible campsite, please contact us (1-888-867-2757). Please be aware that you must make a specific request for an ADA accessible campsite. There are a limited number, so reservations for ADA accessible campsites should be made as far in advance as possible.
