Remaining Closures from Storm Damage

Roan Mountain State Park

Due to severe weather in September 2024, Roan Mountain State Park is open, but with significant closures. We appreciate your patience as we restore and rebuild our beautiful park. 

As of February 5th, 2026, the following areas remain closed to the public:

Park Closures:

  • Upper Campground
  • Bear Wallow Trail

Hampton Creek Cove Natural Area Permanent Closures:

  • Birchfield Trail

If you have any questions about your upcoming reservation, you are welcome to contact Central Reservations at 1 (888) 867-2757 Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM CST.

We are working hard to get things back open for our community and our visitors. The park is accepting volunteers for various projects throughout the area. Please use this link for a list of volunteer opportunities. Please do not access the restricted areas of Roan Mountain State Park, which are currently closed to the public. We hope to offer a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for all those affected by Hurricane Helene.

Accessing a closed or restricted area of the park is a violation of park rules and regulations, subject to a class C misdemeanor.

    Safety and Accessibility

    • Safety

      While Roan Mountain State Park is generally safe, visitors should be aware that the Doe River can flood during tropical storms or heavy snowmelt and rain in a short period of time. Also, beware of black bears that reside in the park and local surrounding areas. Cell service is limited throughout the park and it is recommended that you let a friend or family member know your intended hiking route and ETA.

    • Accessibility

      Roan Mountain State Park offers accessible features to enable greater access for all to the Park Center, interpretive museum, and picnic spots. The park offers all-terrain wheelchairs to assist with designated trails and main areas within the park.

    • Responsible Recreation

      Tennessee State Parks are dedicated to promoting responsible recreation — encouraging visitors to enjoy the parks’ natural beauty while minimizing their own impact. By practicing Leave No Trace principles and respecting park rules, visitors can help preserve these precious resources for future generations. 

    Park Attractions

      Miller Farmstead

      Step back in time to Miller Farmstead, a National Register of Historic Places site. The farmstead tells the story of early 20th-century Appalachian sustenance farmers, offering a glimpse into their daily lives and the Edwardian period. Tours are available from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

      Doe River 

      The Doe River flows through the heart of Roan Mountain State Park, offering scenic views and recreational opportunities. Visitors can wade in the river and enjoy fishing for abundant rainbow and brown trout.  

    Visitor Center Gift Shop

    The Visitor Center Gift Shop is the perfect place to pick up a map, learn about the park, or find a souvenir. You’ll find an assortment of apparel and keepsakes to remember your trip to the park.

    Park Venues and Pavilions

      Roan Mountain Conference Center 

      Host your next gathering in this versatile indoor venue nestled in the Appalachian Mountains . Perfect for meetings, retreats, or special events, the conference center is a popular location for meetings and small conferences and features modern amenities and Wi-Fi access.

      Capacity: 75 - 150

      Chestnut Ridge Overlook 

      The Chestnut Ridge Overlook at Roan Mountain State Park is a beautiful outdoor venue that features breathtaking views of the Highlands of Roan. The platform only can accommodate 10 - 13 people, so it makes the perfect setting for an intimate wedding. There are no restrooms and there is no electricity at the overlook.  

      Capacity: 50

      Amphitheater  

      The Amphitheater at Roan Mountain State Park is the perfect venue for an outdoor event. The capacity is 100 guests with bench seating. It is surrounded by a beautifully wooded area and features electricity, restrooms nearby, and ample parking.

      Pavilions

      Roan Mountain State Park has three pavilions. Full-day reservations can be made online or by calling the park. Amenities include picnic tables, grill, and access to restrooms.

      Capacity: 30 - 100
      Rates: $42 - $72

    For Schools

    Engage your students in a hands-on learning experience with Ranger-led or teacher-led programs at Tennessee State Parks.

  • Energy Efficiency

    Our conference building is naturally cooled. We locally source firewood for heat. We have upgraded our lighting for more efficient lighting.   

  • Reduce Erosion

    To reduce erosion, we have man-made tent pads. We improved drainage at the campground. We maintain ecosystem health with controlled burns and native vegetation.  

  • Recycling and EV Chargers

    We participate in the TVA Green Power Switch program, engage in a successful recycling program, and have installed EV charging stations at our visitor center.
