There is even a designated astronomy field at Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area located right outside the park’s entrance. When you're not gazing up at the stars, you can hike the miles of trails in the state forest or at Big South Fork Recreational Area, swim, fish, or boat in the park's stunning lake, or check out the archaeological museum and the CCC Memorial Museum to learn about the area's rich history and artifacts.
Pickwick Landing State Park

The cabins on Pickwick Lake will make you feel like you’re in a beach house. The stylish, soft nature of the decoration and vibe of the place is sure to make you feel comfortable. The layout combines the space of a bar, dining room, living room, and kitchen, all in a single open floor plan. There are two different bedroom options: either two rooms, each with 2 queens, or three rooms with a king in one and queen-sized beds in the others. But wait, there’s more! The elevated back deck provides a small covered section with a grill as well as an open section, so you can soak in the sun, or cool down in the shade. Cabin guests are also welcome to use the pools at the lodge.

Roan Mountain State Park sits just a few miles below the top of the mountain, where you'll find rhododendron thickets and 360-degree mountain views that rival those of the Smokies. The cool, clear Doe River runs through the park and is one of the most productive trout streams in the state! Hiking and mountain biking trails abound in the park as well as at the top of the mountain, where you can access the Appalachian Trail. Don’t leave the park without catching a glimpse of the Miller Farmstead, a historic farmstead built in 1908 that the park preserves and offers group tours of between April and October.
David Crockett State Park
